The potential is there but it will happen if and only if people code their smart contracts and apps properly.

As a programmer I know very well that it is extremely difficult to create a bug-free program on the first try.

But that is precisely the problem of these cryptocurrency constructs — you only have one chance to code it correctly. If you mess up you can’t undo and take down the contract, because it’s on the blockchain.

This makes contracts and dApps more susceptible to security vulnerabilities, in particular funds theft. Not because of a problem with the technology, but because it’s a people problem — developers simply cannot write bug-free code let alone one that doesn’t have security vulnerabilities.

Most Ethereum transactions to people and services are done using normal wallet transactions and not with a smart contract or dapp, anyway. The transaction volume of BTC is much higher than ETH’s in terms of number of users.
